all in all, i thought we celebrated her birthday in true tan-family style. =p on the night before her birthday, ben and i waited (for AGES!!) for her to go to sleep, before decorating the house with balloons and arranging a surprize skype session with the extended family back home! i really should boast about how awesome they are - they all waited for ages and actually managed to do the "surprize"-yelling-thing awesomely!! =p
food-wise, here's a couple of snaps:
katsura japanese restaurant, 11/129-133 military road, neutral bay
so the food looked pretty, but i think that people come here for the cooked food. unluckily, the bulk of what we ordered was from their sushi/cold dishes menu. it was slightly awkward because the restaurant wasn't busy, the other patrons were pretty quiet, and worse, there was no background music. all i could think all night was how awkward it must be if a couple came here for a first date.
BUT. the food was quite tasty. at this point, we didn't know that the next two nights of jap food was going to kick this place's ass. =p
zushi japanese restaurant, 239 victoria st, darlinghurst
after getting over the fact that it took us 45 minutes to find parking near to the restaurant, i was wholly surprised by this place. i mean, who wouldn't like a place that does gyoza sushi!
i feel terrible though, because i have no blog-worthy photos to post here. (i'm going to blame poor lighting) =( however, i'll make more of an effort the next time i go back (that's right. there will definitely be a next time!). =) OH. and they do free delivery for orders over $50 in the sydney metro area. thank GOD we live in surry hills!
takeru japanese restaurant, 2339 sussex st, sydney
this place wins. i mean, finding the equilibrium between food quality/tastiness/healthiness and price is pretty difficult right? but this place rocked. it was UBER cheap and also gave the option to do half-sized dishes (for an average of $6.90) if you felt like trying more than one thing.
rach and i totally over-ordered, purely because the menu pictures looked really small. but. we were totally satisfied.
so jap three nights in a row. i think i can say with confidence that each night, the food got better while the price got cheaper. =p that's a pretty good trend!!
the morning of rach's birthday, being big on birthdays, i decided to get up *early* (haah. at 8am) to make her some breakfast and to surprize her with her present. i rushed like crazy while she was getting ready, trying to be quiet, and found out that good food doesn't actually have to take ages to cook! i was super happy that she liked it (and that it looked pretty!) the only sad part was that i didn't have enough time to make the hollandaise. =(
but here's my handiwork:
not bad ay?
all up... it was a pretty sweet weekend for a b'day celebration. =)
